A cracked windshield or broken vehicle window is stressful enough. BEAM Auto Glass helps you understand the claim process, verify your coverage and arrange qualifying mobile auto glass service.

Understanding Your Coverage

Does Insurance Cover Windshield Damage?

Windshield and auto glass damage is generally handled under comprehensive coverage, sometimes called “other than collision” coverage. Your benefits depend on your policy, deductible and insurance company.

Comprehensive coverage may apply to damage caused by rocks, road debris, falling objects, hail, vandalism, theft, animal-related incidents and other qualifying glass breakage.

  • Rocks and road debris
  • Falling objects
  • Hail and severe weather
  • Vandalism or theft
  • Animal-related incidents
  • Other covered glass damage
Liability-only coverage generally does not cover damage to your own windshield or vehicle glass.
State Coverage Differences

North Carolina vs. South Carolina

Covered auto glass claims may be handled differently depending on the state, your insurance policy and whether a deductible applies.

01
South Carolina

Covered Safety-Glass Claims

South Carolina provides deductible protection for qualifying automobile safety-glass claims when applicable comprehensive or physical-damage coverage is in place.

  • Applicable comprehensive coverage is required
  • Coverage must be verified before service
  • The insured must participate in reporting the claim
  • Recalibration may require insurer approval
Not automatically “free glass”

Coverage depends on the policy and the insurance company’s claim decision.

North Carolina

Your Deductible May Apply

In North Carolina, covered auto glass damage is generally handled under comprehensive coverage and is normally subject to the deductible listed in the policy.

  • Your comprehensive deductible may apply
  • Some policies include separate glass benefits
  • Some insurers may waive a deductible for chip repair
  • Coverage depends on your policy terms
Compare the cost with your deductible

Paying directly may make more sense when the service cost is lower than the deductible.

Your Choice of Provider

You Can Request BEAM Auto Glass

An insurance company or third-party claim administrator may recommend a preferred glass company. You may still request the repair provider you want, subject to your policy terms and the insurer’s approved pricing.

When reporting the claim, clearly identify the company you have selected.

Repair or Replacement?

The Damage Determines the Service

The size, depth and location of the damage help determine whether the windshield can be repaired safely or should be replaced.

Repair May Be Possible

Small, Contained Damage

  • The chip or crack is relatively small
  • The damage has not reached the windshield edge
  • The inner glass layer remains intact
  • The damage is outside the critical viewing area
  • The damaged area can be stabilized safely

Replacement May Be Required

Larger or Unsafe Damage

  • The crack is long or continuing to spread
  • The damage reaches the edge of the glass
  • Several chips or cracks are present
  • The driver’s visibility is affected
  • The glass is deeply damaged or shattered

Does Insurance Cover ADAS Recalibration?

Many newer vehicles use a forward-facing camera mounted to or near the windshield. That camera may support lane-departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alerts and adaptive cruise control.

When a windshield is replaced, the vehicle may require static, dynamic or combined ADAS recalibration. Recalibration is often considered part of a covered replacement when required by the vehicle manufacturer, but approval depends on the insurer, policy and supporting documentation.

Common Questions

Insurance FAQs

Is windshield replacement automatically free in South Carolina?

No. Applicable comprehensive or physical-damage coverage is still required. A covered safety-glass claim may not be subject to the normal deductible, but the insurer must verify and approve coverage.

Does North Carolina automatically waive the deductible?

Not generally. Covered glass damage is normally subject to the comprehensive deductible shown in the policy unless the policy or insurer provides a separate glass benefit.

Can the insurer require a specific glass company?

The insurer may recommend a provider, but you may request BEAM Auto Glass as your selected repair company. Coverage and payment remain subject to policy terms and approved pricing.

Will filing a glass claim increase my premium?

Rating decisions depend on the insurer, policy, claim history and applicable rules. Ask your insurance company or licensed agent how a claim could affect your policy.

Can BEAM file the entire claim without me?

The policyholder or insured driver generally must participate in reporting and authorizing the claim. BEAM can explain the process and provide the required service information.
